Botz 9105 Dunkelbraun brush-on glaze – glossy, semi-clear glaze for earthenware
Botz liquid glaze 9105 Dunkelbraun is a ready-to-use glaze for earthenware that coats ceramics in a rich dark brown with a smooth, glossy surface. It is semi-transparent, so your clay affects the result: on pale clay the brown looks warm and earthy, while on red or black clay it turns out darker and deeper.
The glaze comes out of the container as a liquid, so there is nothing to mix. It suits vases, decorative items and one-off artistic pieces that are meant to have a rich, natural colour. The firing range runs from 1020 to 1100 °C, with 1020–1060 °C recommended.
Applying the glaze
Stir the glaze well before use, as the colour pigments settle at the bottom. The clay body should be bisque-fired and free of dust and grease.
- Apply 2–3 even coats with a brush, or dip or pour instead
- Let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next
- Let the glaze dry thoroughly before firing
- Fire at 1020–1060 °C; firing up to 1100 °C is possible
- For an even result, allow a hold time of 10–20 minutes at approx. 1050 °C
Colour effect and combinations
As the glaze is semi-transparent, a test tile made from your own clay is the best way to see how dark the brown will turn out. Dunkelbraun makes a contrast with pale shades such as cream or beige. If you combine several glazes on one piece, Botz 9104 Cognac from the same range works well alongside it as a warmer shade of brown.
