Botz 9381 Royalblau Liquid Glaze – glossy cobalt blue for earthenware
Botz liquid glaze 9381 Royalblau is a glossy, bright cobalt blue glaze for earthenware, applied with a brush to bisque-fired ceramics. It is slightly transparent, so your clay affects the colour: on coloured clays the blue looks darker. A test piece made from your clay will show you beforehand how Royalblau looks on it.
The glaze melts out very well and does not run, even at 1100 °C. This makes it forgiving if you want to fire at the upper limit of the firing range. Raku firings are also possible.
Applying the glaze
Stir the glaze well before applying, as the pigments settle at the bottom. If it is too thick, thin it with a little water. Let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next. Keep the base of the piece free of glaze so that it does not stick to the kiln shelf during firing.
- Stir the glaze well and thin with water if needed
- Apply with a brush to bisque-fired ceramics (bisque firing at least 950 °C)
- Allow to dry thoroughly and apply another coat if needed
- Firing range: 1020–1060 °C, can be fired up to 1100 °C
The effect you can expect
Royalblau is a strong, slightly translucent cobalt blue with a glossy surface. Because the glaze stays stable within the firing range and does not run even at 1100 °C, you can also use it on pieces with relief or vertical surfaces. The Botz liquid glaze range includes further shades of blue, for example Marinablau 9380 and Himmelblau 9448. It is best to compare the colours on test tiles made from your clay.
