Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-104 Grape Expectations – glossy purple glaze
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-104 Grape Expectations is a glossy purple ceramic glaze for greenware, bisque and stoneware. It stays where you apply it. That makes it suitable for fine details, clean lines and multicoloured designs where the colours should not run into each other.
The normal firing range is cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart). The glaze is also suitable for high firing on stoneware and can be used in oxidation and reduction firing. A glossy surface is achieved without an additional clear glaze.
Controlling coverage and colour
The number of coats determines the result: one coat looks slightly transparent, while two to three coats make the glaze opaque. If you thin it, you get softer colour gradients and transparent effects. All the colours in the range, 82 in total according to Mayco, can be mixed with one another, so you can also blend your own shades.
Applying the glaze
The best way to apply it is as follows:
- Stir the glaze well.
- Apply evenly with a brush and let each coat dry before applying the next.
- Leave the foot of the piece free of glaze so that it does not stick to the shelf in the kiln.
- For new mixes or dilutions, fire a test piece to check colour and coverage.
Dinnerware and safety
According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. According to ACMI, the AP seal (Approved Product) means: non-hazardous (no labelling required).
