Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-35 Gray Hare – opaque grey brush-on glaze
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-35 Gray Hare is a grey brush-on ceramic glaze. You apply it to wet clay, bisque or stoneware bisque. According to Mayco, the glaze is highly pigmented and viscous. It is suitable for brush strokes as well as for opaque coverage. Gray Hare fires glossy, so you do not need a clear glaze over it.
You control the opacity through the number of coats: one coat looks translucent, and for full opacity Mayco recommends 2–3 coats. All the colours in the range can be mixed with each other. Thinned with water, they give watercolour-style washes.
Firing and colour
Gray Hare is formulated for cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) and cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart). According to Mayco, the glaze can be fired up to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), in oxidation or reduction. At high temperatures the colour changes: at cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in oxidation, Gray Hare stays opaque but, according to Mayco, becomes slightly darker. If the exact shade of grey matters to you, fire a test piece first on your own clay and in your own kiln.
Applying Gray Hare
The glaze stays where you apply it. This helps with lines, details and multicoloured designs.
- Stir the glaze well before applying
- Apply evenly with a brush and let each coat dry to the touch
- For an opaque grey, apply 2–3 coats; for a transparent effect, apply one coat or thin it with water
- Leave the foot of the piece unglazed so that it does not stick to the kiln shelf
Dinnerware and safety
According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. According to ACMI, the AP seal (Approved Product) denotes a product with no hazard labelling.
