Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-25 Crackerjack Brown – ceramic glaze for greenware and bisque
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-25 Crackerjack Brown is a brown ceramic glaze for wet clay and for earthenware and stoneware bisque. You apply it with a brush and fire it in an oxidising or reducing atmosphere. After firing the surface is glossy, so you do not need an additional clear glaze.
All colours in the Stroke & Coat series can be mixed with one another. Diluted with water or medium, they give wash and watercolour effects. The number of coats determines the coverage: one coat is translucent, and for full coverage Mayco recommends 2–3 coats.
Applying the glaze
Stir the glaze well before use and apply it evenly with a soft brush. Let each coat dry before applying the next. One coat is enough for a translucent result; for a rich, opaque brown, use 2–3 coats. Diluted with water, the colour can be applied as a transparent wash, for example for soft gradients.
Firing and choosing
Mayco gives a firing range for the series from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). The glazes are designed for cone 06/05 (cone 05 approx. 1,031 °C, guide value per Orton chart). If you want to fire higher, for example at cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), run a test first, as the colours in the series behave differently at that temperature. For dinnerware: the surface is dinnerware safe, according to Mayco, only after correct firing. Do not fire it together with glazes that are not suitable for dinnerware, and keep brushes and tools clean.
