Mayco SP-216 Speckled Cotton Tail – glossy speckled glaze with colourful specks
Mayco Stroke & Coat SP-216 Speckled Cotton Tail is a glossy speckled glaze for ceramics with yellow, orange and blue specks, supplied in a 236 ml container. You apply it with a brush, for fine lines as well as for solid coverage. The glaze is highly pigmented and slightly viscous.
SP-216 belongs to the Speckled range of Mayco Stroke & Coat. What sets this shade apart is its three speck colours. The glaze is suitable for earthenware and stoneware.
Applying the glaze
Stir the glaze well before use and brush it onto bisque-fired ceramics. The result depends on the thickness of the layer: one coat looks slightly transparent, while 2–3 coats give an opaque, intense finish. Let each coat dry before applying the next, and use several even coats rather than one thick one. A test piece on your own clay body will show you beforehand how the specks turn out.
Firing and the effect of the specks
The glaze is suitable for cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) up to cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). The firing temperature changes the look: in a low-temperature firing at cone 06 the specks stay sharply defined and set clear accents. In a high-temperature firing up to cone 10 they run slightly and look softer and more organic. The surface is glossy after firing, so you do not need an additional clear glaze.
Dinnerware and safety
According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. The AP seal (Approved Product) means, according to ACMI, that no hazard labelling is required. Apply and fire the glaze in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
