Mayco Stroke & Coat SP-201 Speckled Pink-A-Boo – speckled effect glaze with wine-red flecks

Mayco Stroke & Coat SP-201 Speckled Pink-A-Boo is a richly pigmented effect glaze with wine-red flecks, for ceramics and stoneware. It comes in a 236 ml container and fires to a glossy finish, so you do not need an additional clear glaze. The consistency is slightly viscous, so it works equally well for fine brushwork and for opaque areas of colour.

SP-201 belongs to the Speckled range of Mayco Stroke & Coat. What sets it apart here are the wine-red flecks, which give the coloured surface a lively look.

Application and coverage

Apply the glaze with a brush to a clean, bisque-fired clay body and let each coat dry before applying the next. The number of coats determines the effect: one coat looks slightly transparent, while 2–3 coats give a strong, opaque finish. Stir the glaze well before use so that the pigments and flecks are evenly distributed.

Effect depending on firing

The glaze can be fired at low or high temperatures, but the result differs clearly:

• Low firing, cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart): strong colour, clearly visible flecks
• High firing, e.g. cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart): the glaze becomes slightly more transparent, the colour lightens a little, and the flecks run slightly and look softer

Choosing the firing temperature

If you want the flecks to show clearly as dots, fire at a low temperature. If you prefer a softer, flowing effect, choose a high firing. A test piece made from your own clay and with your number of coats will show you in advance how the glaze looks in your kiln. Leave the foot of the piece free of glaze so that nothing sticks to the kiln shelf.
