Mayco Speckled My Blue Heaven SP-245 – glossy glaze with blue speckles

Mayco Stroke & Coat SP-245 Speckled My Blue Heaven is an effect glaze with blue speckles for earthenware and stoneware. It fires glossy and needs no additional clear glaze. The 236 ml contents are enough for several pieces, depending on their size and the number of coats.

The result depends on the number of coats and the firing temperature. One coat looks translucent; with 2–3 coats the glaze becomes fully opaque. In a low-temperature firing at cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) the colour stays strong and the speckles are clearly visible. At cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) the glaze is opaque in oxidation according to Mayco, the colour lightens to a medium brown and the speckles remain.

Applying the glaze

Mayco Stroke & Coat is designed to be brushed onto bisque-fired ceramics or damp clay. Its slightly viscous consistency suits even coverage as well as fine brushwork.

• Stir the glaze well before applying
• 1 coat for a translucent effect, 2–3 coats for full coverage
• Let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next
• No clear glaze needed, the surface fires glossy

Firing and colour effect

According to Mayco, the Speckled glazes are formulated for cone 06/05 (approx. 998 to approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart), while Stroke & Coat as a whole is suitable for cone 06–10, in oxidation or reduction. At high temperatures the speckles may run. To get the result you expect, it is best to fire a test piece with your own clay and your own firing programme.

Dinnerware

Mayco states that this glaze is dinnerware safe, i.e. suitable for tableware after firing. According to ACMI, the AP seal means no hazard labelling is required.
