Mayco Stroke & Coat SP-274 Speckled Hot Tamale – glossy speckled glaze with white flecks

Mayco Stroke & Coat SP-274 Speckled Hot Tamale is an effect glaze for earthenware and stoneware. It fires glossy and shows white flecks that give a lively surface, without the need for a clear glaze. It comes in a 236 ml container. It can be applied with a brush, for precise strokes as well as for even coverage.

You control how strong the colour becomes through the number of coats: one coat looks slightly transparent, while 2–3 coats give a rich, opaque surface. When fired at cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in an oxidising atmosphere, the glaze turns opaque according to the manufacturer. The colour lightens to a medium brown, and the flecks remain visible.

Application

Stroke & Coat is designed for application on bisque-fired ceramics, both earthenware and stoneware, and according to the manufacturer it is also suitable for damp clay. Stir the glaze well before use. Apply it in even brush strokes and let each coat dry completely before applying the next. For an opaque surface you need 2–3 coats. With just one coat you get a more transparent look in which the flecks are clearly visible.

Firing and result

The glaze is suitable for low-fire and high-fire. When fired at cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart), the colour stays strong and the flecks are clearly visible. In a high firing the colour shifts: at cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) it lightens to a medium brown. Bear this in mind when choosing colours if you fire pieces at different temperature ranges. A test piece on your own clay will show you the result beforehand.

Dinnerware and safety

According to the manufacturer, the glaze is dinnerware safe. The AP seal (Approved Product) means, according to ACMI, that the glaze is free of hazard labelling. Even so, follow the manufacturer's instructions when working with it.
