Mayco Designer Liner SG-404 Blue – underglaze liner for fine lines and lettering
The Mayco Designer Liner SG-404 in Blue is a clay-based, highly pigmented underglaze with a metal writing tip for fine lines, lettering and illustrations on ceramics. You apply the colour straight from the 37 ml bottle, with no extra brush. Depending on pressure and speed, you can draw fine or bold lines. You can also blend the colour with a brush to create watercolour or ink-wash effects.
Without a glaze over it, the liner fires matt. It works best under a non-running, transparent or semi-transparent glaze. It is not dimensional: if applied too thickly, it can crack and flake off. The Designer Liner comes in ten colours from SG-401 to SG-410, and Light Blue is available separately as SG-410.
Working with the liner
The liner is suitable for lettering, patterns and outlines on greenware, bisque or over other glazes. The tip can clog as the colour dries, so clean it after use and close the bottle again.
- Make sure the surface is free of dust
- Draw a test line on paper so that the colour flows evenly
- Draw lines with even pressure and in one stroke, and do not apply too thickly
- Leave the colour to dry and, if needed, cover with a transparent glaze
- Fire
Firing and glaze
Mayco gives a range of cone 06 to cone 6 for the liner series. According to Mayco, the colour no longer changes at cone 6. For glazing over the liner, choose a glaze that does not run so that the lines stay sharp. A test tile will show you beforehand how the blue and the glaze work together in your firing.
- Cone 06: approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart
- Cone 6: approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart
- Without glaze: matt surface
