Mayco Fundamental Underglaze UG-082 Tucson Turquoise – turquoise underglaze for brush and sponge

Mayco Fundamental Underglaze UG-082 Tucson Turquoise is a turquoise underglaze for decorating ceramics. You apply it with a brush or sponge to create areas of colour, patterns and motifs on clay, greenware or bisque-fired ware.

Fundamentals Underglaze is Mayco's first product line and is designed for consistent colour and good handling. Tucson Turquoise is one of several colours in the series. Without clear glaze, the underglaze fires matt; with clear glaze, it gives a glossy surface.

Applying Tucson Turquoise

Mayco recommends 2–3 coats on wet clay, on greenware or on bisque fired to cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart). Several thin coats rather than one thick one give a more even area of colour. Let each coat dry before you apply the next. Use the brush for patterns and outlines and the sponge for larger areas and textures. If you spray it, see the warning below.

Firing and finish

The firing range runs from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). At cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) and cone 10 the colour becomes more concentrated (according to Mayco, "Color concentration occurs"), so the turquoise can look different from cone 06. For these firings Mayco recommends the clear glaze SW-001 Stoneware Clear. A test piece on your own clay will show you beforehand how the colour looks in your firing.

Decorating tableware

For tableware, the underglaze is only suitable under a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). Without clear glaze this does not apply. The AP seal (Approved Product) means, according to ACMI, that no hazard labelling is required.
