Mayco Underglaze UG-208 Dragon Red – dark red for ceramics
Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze UG-208 Dragon Red is an underglaze in a rich, dark red for decorating ceramics, supplied in 59 ml (2 fl oz). You can brush it on, dab it or layer it: applied thinly it gives transparent shades of red, and in several coats strong, opaque areas of colour. For opaque areas you would normally apply three coats; fewer are enough for designs. Dragon Red suits strongly contrasting motifs, accents and decoration on tableware, provided you fire it with clear glaze as described below.
According to Mayco, the firing range of the Fundamentals Underglazes runs from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). The colours are designed for cone 06/05, but most keep their shade at higher temperatures too. For Dragon Red, Mayco gives a colour concentration at cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) and at cone 10. Mayco recommends testing at your own firing temperature before use.
Application
Mayco gives the following firing sequence for the Fundamentals Underglazes. Shake the bottle well before applying.
- Apply the underglaze to wet or leather-hard clay
- Fire to cone 04 (approx. 1,063 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
- Optionally apply clear glaze and glaze fire: earthenware at cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 05 (approx. 1,031 °C, guide value per Orton chart), stoneware at cone 5 to 10 (up to approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
Clear glaze and tableware
Without clear glaze the underglaze fires matt. If you want more intensity of colour, or you are decorating tableware, apply clear glaze or matt clear glaze over it; for Dragon Red, Mayco recommends the clear glaze SW-001. For tableware: only under a transparent, tableware-safe clear glaze. If you make tableware, you should also check the finished ware yourself.
Choosing from the range
Dragon Red is the dark, rich red of the series. The Fundamentals range includes other reds such as Flame Red (UG-207) and Fire Engine Red (UG-206), as well as yellows, blues, greens, greys and whites. According to Mayco, all the colours can be combined with one another, as they are designed for the same firing range.
