Mayco UG-051 China White – opaque white underglaze for ceramics

Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze UG-051 China White is an opaque underglaze in a neutral white for decorating ceramics. You can use it for light areas, contrasts and clean lines, or lay down a white base for further layers of colour. The colour can be painted, dabbed and layered. The pot contains 59 ml (2 fl oz).

China White fires matt without a clear glaze. For stronger colour and for dinnerware, apply a transparent clear glaze over it. According to Mayco, the unglazed colour stays the same at both cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart, oxidation) and cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart, reduction). This helps if you combine white with other colours in the same firing.

Working with China White

Shake the colour well before use. Apply it directly to wet or leather-hard clay; bisque is also suitable as a surface. For full coverage you will usually need several coats, while fewer are enough for delicate motifs. Let each coat dry before applying the next, so the surface stays even. The colour is not intended for spraying.

• Fire the underglaze to cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
• Then, optionally, clear glaze and glaze firing: earthenware at cone 06–05 (approx. 998–1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart), stoneware at higher cones up to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
• A test piece fired at your own temperature shows you the result in advance

Dinnerware and clear glaze

Unglazed, China White has a matt finish. A transparent clear glaze makes the white more intense. For dinnerware, the underglaze is only suitable under a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). Without a clear glaze it is not considered dinnerware safe. The product carries the AP seal of the ACMI; according to ACMI, it carries no hazard labelling.
