Mayco UG-204 Orange – warm underglaze for brush and sponge
Mayco Fundamental Underglaze UG-204 Orange is an underglaze in a warm orange for ceramics. You use it to paint areas, patterns and graphic designs before you glaze the piece with a clear glaze. It belongs to Mayco's Fundamentals Underglaze series, which is designed for consistent colour and easy application.
You can apply the colour to wet clay, greenware and bisque-fired ware at cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart). That makes it suitable for every stage of work, from a freshly thrown piece to an already bisque-fired blank.
Applying the underglaze
Stir the colour well before use. Then apply it with a brush or sponge in 2 to 3 coats, letting each coat dry before you add the next. This gives an even application without streaks. Use the brush for patterns and outlines and the sponge to cover larger areas.
Firing and finish
Without clear glaze the underglaze fires matt; with a transparent clear glaze you get a glossy surface. At cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) you fire in an oxidising atmosphere. Mayco also shows results at cone 6 oxidising (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) and cone 10 reducing (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). At cones 6 and 10 the colour becomes more concentrated, so the orange looks different there than in a low firing. A test tile in your own clay and firing schedule will show you the result in advance.
For dinnerware only with clear glaze
Orange UG-204 is suitable for dinnerware only when used with a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze. If you decorate cups or plates, glaze the painted area completely with clear glaze. Unglazed areas or areas fired only to a matt finish are not intended for contact with food.
