Mayco Orange Sorbet UG-085 – orange underglaze for ceramic decoration

Mayco Fundamental Underglaze UG-085 Orange Sorbet is an orange underglaze for decorating ceramics, for example with patterns, motifs or accent areas. You apply it with a brush or sponge to wet clay, greenware or bisque-fired ceramics. Mayco gives cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart) as the bisque firing.

Orange Sorbet belongs to Mayco's Fundamentals series, the manufacturer's first product line. Without clear glaze, Fundamentals colours fire matt; with clear glaze you get a glossy surface. For tableware: the underglaze is dinnerware safe only under a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze).

Applying the underglaze

Stir the colour well before applying. Mayco recommends 2–3 coats with a brush or sponge, letting each one dry to the touch before the next. This makes the surface more even, and lines or patterns stay crisp. You should not spray the colour.

Firing and clear glaze

For the Fundamentals series, Mayco gives a firing range of cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). At cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) and cone 10, colour concentration occurs according to Mayco, so the colour may differ from a firing at cone 06. A test tile made from your own clay shows you the result beforehand. For these firing ranges, Mayco recommends SW-001 Stoneware Clear as the clear glaze.

Decorating tableware

If you want to decorate cups or plates, cover the underglaze completely with a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze. Only then is the piece suitable for tableware.
