Mayco Jungle Gems CG-779 Black Opal – black crystal glaze with red crystals
Mayco Jungle Gems CG-779 Black Opal is an opaque black crystal glaze for bisque-fired ceramics, with large red crystals suspended in it. During firing they develop into colour blooms and organic patterns. The contrast between the dark base and the red crystals shows to best effect on vases, bowls and sculptures.
The jar contains 118 ml, which is enough to try the glaze out on smaller pieces. The crystals spread slightly differently with every firing, so no two pieces look exactly alike. CG-779 belongs to the Mayco Jungle Gems series, which consists of crystal glazes in various colours.
Applying Black Opal
Shake the jar well before each use and stir so that the crystals are distributed in the glaze. Apply the glaze with a fan brush to bisque-fired ceramics. Spray application is not suitable.
- Apply 2–3 even coats and allow to dry in between
- With the third coat, redistribute the crystals if necessary so that they lie evenly
- Do not place crystals near the base, as the crystals can run during firing
- Allow to dry thoroughly before firing
Firing and use
Fire the glaze in the range from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart). Mayco recommends bisque firing at cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart). As the crystals flow, it is best to place pieces on a kiln shelf protected with kiln wash. A test piece will show you beforehand how the crystals and colour blooms develop on your clay body. Black Opal suits vases, bowls and sculptures that serve as decoration, not plates, cups or other vessels that come into contact with food.
