Mayco Wild Violet UG-93 – purple underglaze for clay and bisque

Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze UG-93 Wild Violet is a purple underglaze for decorating ceramics. Apply it with a brush to leather-hard clay, bisque or greenware, for areas of colour, details and motifs such as flowers or patterns. The colour can be painted, dabbed and built up in several layers.

The colour effect depends on the firing. According to Mayco, Wild Violet fires matt at cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) without clear glaze. With clear glaze or matt clear glaze, the colour becomes more intense. At cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in an oxidising atmosphere it becomes lighter, and at cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in reduction it shifts clearly towards blue. If you fire in the higher ranges, make a test tile in your own kiln first.

Applying and firing Wild Violet

Shake the bottle well before use. For even areas of colour and decoration, apply 2 to 3 coats and let each coat dry. On bisque (cone 04, approx. 1,063 °C, guide value per Orton chart) you can apply the clear glaze directly over the unfired underglaze and fire everything in one firing at cone 06/05. Mayco gives cone 06/05 as the reference firing. Most colours also withstand higher temperatures, but the result then changes.

Decorating tableware

For cups, plates and other functional ceramics, use Wild Violet only under a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). Without clear glaze, the underglaze is not intended for tableware. According to ACMI, the AP seal (Approved Product) means that no hazard labelling is required.
