Botz 9106 Liquid Glaze – colourless clear glaze with a high gloss for earthenware
Botz 9106 Transparent High-Gloss liquid glaze is a ready-to-use, colourless and highly clear glaze for earthenware in the firing range 1020–1100 °C. You apply it over bisque-fired or painted surfaces: the surface gains a gloss, and the colours and textures underneath stay visible.
The glaze works as a final coat over underglaze decoration, engobes or coloured glazes when the colours should not be altered. It is highly transparent and lets patterns show through clearly. You do not need to mix it, just stir it well.
Applying and firing the glaze
Stir the glaze thoroughly before use so that the settled particles are brought back into suspension. The clay body should be bisque-fired and free of dust and grease. Then apply the glaze to the piece with a brush, by dipping or by pouring. Painted surfaces are sealed in the same way.
- Apply one to two thin coats and let each coat dry well
- Leave to dry for about a day before firing
- Firing range: 1020–1060 °C, can be fired up to 1100 °C
- For a particularly smooth gloss, allow a hold time of 10–20 minutes at approx. 1050 °C
Avoiding milky patches
The glaze is designed for transparency. If you apply it too thickly, it can turn milky during firing, especially on dark clay. It is better to work thinly and evenly rather than layering many coats on top of each other. A test tile made from your own clay will show you beforehand how the gloss and clarity look on your clay body. Do not fire the glaze above 1100 °C, as it is designed for earthenware.
