Botz 9041 Engobe Weiß – opaque, matt and fireable from 900 to 1100 °C

Botz liquid glaze 9041 Engobe Weiß is a liquid, opaque white engobe for painting and decorating ceramics. You apply it with a brush or slip trailer to leather-hard to dry greenware or bisque-fired clay. It is stable in a firing range of 900 to 1100 °C, and Botz recommends firing at approx. 1050 °C.

Unglazed, the engobe fires to an earthy matt finish. Because it is opaque, it suits clean white surfaces, decoration on dark clay and techniques such as marbling, feathering and sgraffito. It belongs to the Botz liquid engobe series, which also includes black, grey, ochre yellow and several blues and greens.

Using the engobe

Stir the engobe well before use. Apply 2 to 3 coats to leather-hard to dry greenware or bisque-fired clay, letting each coat dry slightly before the next. Fire at approx. 1050 °C. Without glaze, the surface stays earthy matt. For a stronger colour effect, apply a thin coat of Botz 9106 Transparent glossy over the engobe.

Techniques and uses

For marbling and feathering, use the engobe slightly diluted on a dampened, bisque-fired or leather-hard clay body. For sgraffito, scratch patterns through the white engobe layer so that the clay body underneath shows; the contrast is especially clear on dark clay.

• Mixed with Botz 9450 in a ratio of 30 % engobe to 70 % glaze: coloured glaze with a satin finish and fine speckles, apply 3 coats
• Can also be used as casting slip for small objects: fired at 1050 °C, it vitrifies and is frost-proof
