Botz 9060 Orange engobe – opaque liquid engobe for ceramics

Botz liquid glaze 9060 Engobe Orange is an opaque, liquid engobe in orange for decorating ceramics. You apply it with a brush or slip trailer to leather-hard to dry, unfired or bisque-fired clay. Unglazed, the surface turns an earthy matt. The engobe stays stable across a firing range of 900 to 1100 °C.

Fire the engobe at approx. 1050 °C. Stir it well before use so that the colour pigments are evenly distributed. Apply it 2 to 3 times for an opaque finish.

Application

The engobe adheres to leather-hard to dry clay as well as to bisque-fired clay. Apply several thin coats rather than one thick one, and let each coat dry slightly before applying the next.

• For more intense colour, apply a thin coat of clear, glossy glaze over the top; single firing is also possible

Techniques and uses

The engobe is suitable for marbling and feathering techniques. For these, use it slightly thinned on dampened, bisque-fired or leather-hard clay. It also works well for sgraffito: apply the engobe and scratch lines or patterns through it so that the surface beneath shows. It can be mixed with Botz 9450 in a ratio of 30 % engobe to 70 % glaze. This gives a coloured glaze with a satin-gloss surface and fine speckles, applied in 3 coats. For small objects you can also use the engobe as casting slip. Fired at 1050 °C, it vitrifies and is frost-proof.
