Botz Stoneware Engobe 9821 Gelb – matt, opaque engobe for stoneware

Botz Stoneware Engobe 9821 Gelb is a liquid engobe for colouring ceramics, fired at 1180–1280 °C. It belongs to the Botz Edition series and comes in a 200 ml tin. Unglazed, it fires to a soft matt, earthy finish, covers well and reproduces contours sharply.

You decide how glossy it is: under a clear glaze, for example Botz 9300 or 9870, the yellow looks more intense and turns glossy. The engobe can be mixed with other colours from the Edition range; with white (9801), for example, you get lighter pastel shades.

Application

Stir the engobe well before use so that the colour pigments are evenly distributed. Then apply 2–3 coats with a brush to leather-hard or bisque-fired clay and let each coat dry thoroughly. Several thin coats cover more evenly than one thick application, which shows brush marks more easily. Then fire within the range of 1180 to 1280 °C, in which the engobe remains stable.

Matt or glossy – which to choose?

Unglazed, the yellow stays matt and earthy. This works well for decorations, lines and areas that you deliberately want without shine. If you want a glossy, more vivid surface, cover the engobe with a clear glaze. A small test piece will show you beforehand how colour and glaze work together on your clay. The engobe is also available in the series in an 800 ml tin if you are working with larger quantities.
