Botz Stoneware Engobe 9823 Tropic – purple engobe, matt with good coverage

Botz Stoneware Engobe 9823 Tropic in purple colours stoneware clay in the firing range 1180–1280 °C. It belongs to the Botz Edition of 15 stoneware engobes. Without glaze it fires to a soft matt, earthy finish with good coverage, and contours stay sharp. According to Botz, the Edition also covers well on dark clay bodies.

The Edition colours can be mixed with one another, so you can grade shades or develop your own tones. The pot contains 200 ml.

Applying the engobe

Apply the engobe to leather-hard or bisque-fired clay. Stir it well before use, as the pigments settle at the bottom.

• Apply 2–3 coats with a brush
• Let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next
• Apply several thin coats rather than one thick coat, to avoid runs and cracks during drying
• Then fire within the firing range 1180–1280 °C; Botz shows its examples fired at 1250 °C

Matt or glossy: with and without glaze

Applied neat, Tropic stays matt and earthy. For a glossy, vividly bright shade, apply a coat of clear glaze such as Botz 9300 or 9870 over the engobe. For tableware, Botz recommends the engobes only in combination with a suitable glaze, depending on the glaze. A test piece on your own clay will show you beforehand how the purple turns out.

Keep out of reach of children. Do not eat, drink or smoke when glazing, and wash your hands afterwards. Children should only work under supervision. Ventilate the kiln room well during firing.
