Botz PRO 9312 Onyxschwarz – glossy liquid glaze for earthenware and stoneware

Botz PRO liquid glaze 9312 Onyxschwarz is a ready-to-use, glossy brush-on glaze in black for earthenware and stoneware. The firing range runs from 1020 to 1280 °C. So you do not have to choose the glaze for a particular kiln or clay: with the same tin you can glaze pieces for an earthenware firing as well as for a stoneware firing.

The colour effect changes with the temperature. According to Botz, the following applies to the PRO series: in the earthenware range from 1020 °C, the glazes become coloured and almost opaque. At around 1150 °C, as needed by some early-vitrifying clays, the colour is retained, but the surface tends to become semi-transparent. At high-fire temperatures a glassy, semi-transparent surface is produced. Good results are also possible on porcelain at 1250 °C. With semi-transparent results, the colour of your clay influences the colour impression; a test piece will show you beforehand how your black turns out.

Applying the glaze

Stir the glaze well before applying it and brush it evenly onto the piece. How many coats you apply depends on the firing temperature (information according to Botz for the PRO series):

• Earthenware from 1020 °C: 2–3 coats, coloured and almost opaque
• Around 1150 °C: 2 coats, more semi-transparent surface
• High fire/stoneware and porcelain around 1250 °C: 2 coats, glassy and semi-transparent

Preventing runs

The glaze tends to run when applied thickly, according to Botz from about 1150 °C. So do not apply it too thickly, especially on the lower part of the piece, and leave the foot unglazed. Protect the kiln shelf from glaze drips with kiln wash.

Combining and container size

Botz states that the PRO glazes combine well with Botz Unidekor. Onyxschwarz is available in 200 ml for trying out and for smaller pieces, and also in 800 ml for larger quantities.
