Botz 9048 Engobe Schwarz – opaque, matt liquid engobe for 900–1100 °C

Botz liquid glaze 9048 Engobe Schwarz is an opaque black liquid engobe for ceramics. Apply it with a brush or slip trailer to leather-hard to dry clay, either greenware or bisque-fired. Left unglazed, the surface has an earthy matt finish. The engobe is stable within a firing range of 900 to 1100 °C and is fired at approx. 1050 °C.

For an even stronger colour intensity, apply a thin glaze coat of Botz 9106 Transparent glänzend over the engobe. This also works in single firing.

Application

Stir the engobe well before use. Apply two to three coats to leather-hard to dry clay, either raw or bisque-fired. Several coats give a more even black.

Techniques and mixes

If you thin the engobe slightly and apply it to dampened, bisque-fired or leather-hard clay, it is also suitable for marbling and feathering techniques. For sgraffito, scratch through the engobe layer to expose the clay underneath. It can be mixed with Botz 9450 in a ratio of 30 % engobe to 70 % glaze. This gives a coloured glaze with a satin finish and fine speckles, applied in three coats. For small objects you can also use the engobe as casting slip. Fired at 1050 °C, it vitrifies and is then frost-resistant.

Firing temperature and colour

Temperature affects the shade: at around 900 °C the black turns rather grey, and from approx. 1020 °C you get a rich black. Fire at approx. 1050 °C if depth of colour matters to you.
