Botz 9049 Engobe Grau – matt, opaque liquid engobe for 900–1100 °C

Botz liquid glaze 9049 Engobe Grey is an opaque liquid engobe in grey for ceramics. You apply it to leather-hard to dry, unfired or bisque-fired clay. Unglazed, it fires to an earthy matt finish, and the colour stays even and flat. The engobe is stable in the firing range from 900 to 1100 °C.

With a thin clear glaze on top, the grey gains more colour intensity. The engobe is also suitable for marbling and feathering techniques and for sgraffito.

Application

Stir the engobe well before use. Apply 2 to 3 coats with a brush or slip trailer to leather-hard to dry, unfired or bisque-fired clay. Fire at approx. 1050 °C, within the firing range of 900 to 1100 °C. If you want the colour to look stronger still, apply a thin coat of Botz 9106 Transparent glänzend over the top. Single firing is also possible.

Techniques and uses

For marbling and feathering techniques, use the engobe slightly diluted on dampened, bisque-fired or leather-hard clay. For sgraffito, scratch patterns through the engobe layer. The engobe can be mixed with Botz 9450: with 30 % engobe and 70 % glaze, you get a coloured glaze with a silky-sheen surface and fine speckles, applied in 3 coats. For small objects, you can also use the engobe as casting slip. Fired at 1050 °C, it vitrifies and is frost-proof.
