Botz Engobe 9043 Ockergelb – opaque, matt liquid engobe for 900–1100 °C

Botz liquid glaze 9043 Engobe Ockergelb is an opaque liquid engobe in a plain yellow for ceramics. You apply it with a brush or slip trailer to leather-hard to dry clay, either unfired or bisque-fired. Left unglazed, engobes fire to an earthy matt finish; under a thin clear glaze the colour looks more intense.

The engobe is stable in a firing range of 900 to 1100 °C and is fired at approx. 1050 °C. You can therefore fire it together with many low-firing clays and glazes.

Application

Stir the engobe well before use. Then apply two to three coats with a brush or slip trailer. Let each coat dry slightly before applying the next, so that the colour covers evenly. The clay can be leather-hard to dry, raw or bisque-fired. Fire at approx. 1050 °C. For a more intense colour, apply a thin coat of Botz 9106 Transparent glänzend over the top. If you leave the engobe unglazed, the surface stays earthy matt.

Techniques and mixes

The engobe is suitable for marbling and feathering techniques. For these, use it slightly thinned on dampened, bisque-fired or leather-hard clay. It is also suitable for sgraffito: you scratch the design into the engobe layer so that the clay underneath shows through.

• Mixed with Botz 9450 in the ratio 30 % engobe to 70 % glaze: a coloured glaze with a silky-satin surface and fine speckles, applied in three coats
• For small objects it can also be used as casting slip: fire at 1050 °C; it vitrifies and becomes frost-proof
