Botz Engobe 9044 Türkis – coloured engobe for ceramics

Botz Engobe 9044 Türkis is a coloured, liquid clay slip for decorating ceramics. Apply 2 to 3 coats with a brush or slip trailer to leather-hard to dry greenware or to bisque-fired ware. Unglazed, it fires to an earthy matt finish. For a stronger colour, apply a thin coat of Botz 9106 Transparent glänzend over it.

According to Botz, the engobes can be applied to clay at any stage of dryness. After that you have two options: bisque fire and apply a clear glaze, or fire unglazed straight to the final temperature.

Techniques with the engobe

Slightly thinned and applied to a dampened, leather-hard or bisque-fired surface, it is suitable for marbling and feathering. For feathering, apply wet lines of engobe onto a wet engobe surface and draw a needle or feather across them to create flowing patterns. For sgraffito, apply the engobe as an opaque coat, leave it to stiffen slightly and then scratch a pattern into it so that the clay underneath shows through.

All Botz engobes can be mixed with one another. Mixed with Botz 9450 (30% engobe, 70% glaze) and applied in 3 coats, it gives a coloured glaze with a silky-gloss surface and fine speckles. For small objects you can also use the engobe as casting slip; fired at 1050 °C, it vitrifies and is frost-proof.

Which engobe series? 9044 belongs to the Botz engobes for 900–1100 °C, i.e. the earthenware range. For stoneware firings, Botz has its own engobe series for 1180–1280 °C.
