Botz Engobe Rot (Pink)

Botz Engobe Red (Pink) – opaque colour for ceramics, 900–1100 °C

Botz liquid glaze engobe in Red (Pink) is an opaque, plain-coloured engobe for decorating ceramics. You apply it with a brush or slip trailer to leather-hard to dry, unfired or bisque-fired clay. The engobe is stable in the firing range of 900 to 1100 °C and is fired at approx. 1050 °C.

Unglazed, the engobe fires to an earthy matt finish. For stronger colour intensity, apply a thin coat of clear, glossy glaze over it. This also works in single firing.

Applying the engobe

Stir the engobe well before use. Apply 2 to 3 coats and let each coat dry slightly before applying the next. This gives an evenly opaque colour. Fire at approx. 1050 °C.

Techniques and mixes

The engobe is suitable for marbling and feathering techniques. For these, use it slightly thinned on dampened, bisque-fired or leather-hard clay. It is also suitable for sgraffito: scratch through the engobe layer while the clay is leather-hard so that the clay body underneath shows through. The engobe can be mixed with Botz 9450 (30 % engobe, 70 % glaze). This gives a coloured glaze with a silky-gloss surface and fine speckles, applied in 3 coats. For small objects, you can also use the engobe as casting slip and fire it at 1050 °C, where it vitrifies.
