Botz Engobe 9042 Hellgelb – opaque and matt for ceramics

Botz liquid glaze 9042 Engobe Hellgelb is an opaque liquid engobe in light yellow for colouring ceramics. You apply it with a brush or slip trailer to leather-hard to dry clay, either unfired or bisque-fired. It is stable in the firing range of 900–1100 °C. Unglazed, the surface turns an earthy matt.

A thin clear glaze over the top makes the colour more intense. The engobe is also suitable for marbling and feathering techniques, for sgraffito and, mixed with glaze, for coloured effects.

Applying the engobe

Stir the engobe thoroughly before use. It can be applied to leather-hard to dry, unfired clay or to a bisque-fired body. For the colour to be opaque, apply it two to three times. Let each coat dry slightly before applying the next.

Techniques and mixtures

For marbling and feathering techniques, use the engobe slightly diluted on a dampened, bisque-fired or leather-hard body. For sgraffito, scratch a pattern through the layer of engobe so that the base shows through. If you want a stronger colour, apply a thin glaze over the top with Botz 9106 Transparent glänzend. Mixed with Botz 9450 in a ratio of 30 % engobe to 70 % glaze, it makes an inexpensive coloured glaze with a satin finish and fine speckles. Apply this mixture three times. For small objects you can also use the engobe as casting slip. You then fire it at 1050 °C, at which point it vitrifies and becomes frost-resistant.
