Botz Engobe 9061 Dunkelrot – opaque, matt colour for ceramics
Botz engobe 9061 in Dunkelrot is a liquid, opaque engobe for colouring ceramics. You apply it with a brush or slip trailer to leather-hard, dry, unfired or bisque-fired clay. Unglazed, it fires to an earthy matt finish; with a thin clear glaze over the top, the colour becomes even more intense.
The engobe is stable in the firing range of 900 to 1100 °C, and it fires at approx. 1050 °C. It therefore suits pottery that you fire at these temperatures.
Applying the engobe
Stir the engobe well before use. Apply two to three coats so that the colour covers reliably. For marbling and feathering techniques, thin it slightly and work on dampened, bisque-fired or leather-hard clay. It is also suitable for sgraffito: you scratch the pattern into the engobe layer and so expose the clay beneath.
Firing and finishing options
Depending on what you want, you can achieve different surfaces:
- Unglazed: earthy matt surface
- Thinly glazed with Botz 9106 Transparent glossy: stronger colour, also possible in a single firing
- Mixed with Botz 9450 (30 % engobe, 70 % glaze) and applied in three coats: coloured glaze with a satin finish and fine speckles
- For small objects, it can also be used as casting slip: fired at 1050 °C, it vitrifies and is frost-proof
