Botz engobe 9047 Dunkelblau – opaque liquid engobe for 900–1100 °C

Botz liquid glaze 9047 Engobe Dunkelblau is a liquid, opaque engobe in a solid dark blue. You use it to decorate ceramics on leather-hard to bone-dry clay, either unfired or bisque-fired. An engobe is a coloured clay slip, not a glaze: left unglazed, it fires to an earthy matt finish. It is stable in the firing range of 900 to 1100 °C and is fired at approx. 1050 °C.

If you want a stronger colour effect, apply a thin coat of Botz 9106 Transparent glänzend over the engobe. The colour then looks more intense and the surface is glossy.

Applying and firing the engobe

Stir the engobe well before use, as the colour particles settle. Apply two to three coats with a brush or slip trailer. This works on leather-hard to bone-dry clay, unfired or bisque-fired. Fire at approx. 1050 °C.

• Can be mixed with Botz 9450 (30 % engobe, 70 % glaze): gives a coloured glaze with a silky-satin surface and fine speckles, apply 3 coats

Techniques and other uses

The engobe is suitable for marbling and feathering techniques as well as for sgraffito. For marbling and feathering, use it slightly thinned on dampened, bisque-fired or leather-hard clay. For small objects you can also use it as casting slip. Fire at 1050 °C, at which point it vitrifies and becomes frost-proof.
