Botz Stoneware Engobe 9825 Bamboo – opaque green engobe for 1180–1280 °C

Botz stoneware engobe 9825 Bamboo is a green engobe with good coverage from the Botz Edition range. You can use it to decorate stoneware fired in the firing range 1180–1280 °C. Without glaze it has a soft matt, earthy look and the outlines stay sharp. That makes it suitable for patterns, lines and painting on the clay body.

If you apply a clear glaze over it, for example Botz 9300 or 9870, the colour becomes more intense and glossy. According to Botz, the Edition engobes with a suitable glaze are recommended for tableware, depending on the glaze. According to Botz, the Edition colours also cover on dark clay bodies and can be mixed with one another. This lets you mix your own in-between shades.

Applying the engobe

The engobe is intended for leather-hard or bisque-fired clay. Stir it thoroughly before use, as colour pigments settle at the bottom.

• Stir well.
• Apply 2–3 coats with a brush.
• Let each coat dry well before applying the next.
• For a glossy finish, then apply 1 coat of clear glaze such as Botz 9300 or 9870.
• Fire within the firing range 1180–1280 °C. Botz shows its examples at 1250 °C.

Matt or glossy?

Applied on its own, Bamboo stays matt with sharp contours, which suits patterns, lines and motifs that should remain clearly defined. Under a clear glaze the green looks stronger and the surface is glossy. According to Botz, whether a piece is suitable for food use depends on the glaze chosen. This has not been established for pure, unglazed surfaces. A test piece made from your own clay will show you beforehand how colour and glaze work together.

Choosing colours in the Edition

Botz Edition comprises 15 stoneware engobes, available in 200 ml and 800 ml. This pot contains 200 ml. Because the colours can be mixed, you can tint Bamboo with other Edition colours instead of buying a separate pot for every shade.
