Metal kiln stand for hollow ware – firing support for baubles and bells
With the metal kiln stand you can glaze-fire hollow ceramic pieces such as baubles or bells without the glazed underside resting on the kiln shelf. According to the manufacturer, the stand can be used up to 1250 °C, depending on the weight of the ceramic.
Which version suits your piece?
The stand is available with one, two or three points at a height of 100 mm, and with one point at a height of 150 mm. A single point is for balancing small, light pieces such as baubles or bells with a small opening. Several points spread the weight and give larger or heavier hollow pieces more support. Choose the 150 mm version if the piece hangs lower and needs more clearance from the kiln shelf.
Using the stand
Place the stand on the kiln shelf and set the hollow piece on it so that it sits securely and cannot tip over. Make sure the piece touches neither the kiln nor other items during firing. Where the ceramic rests, a small mark usually remains after firing, so leave this spot unglazed or apply only a thin layer of glaze there.
Practical tip: At high temperatures and with heavy pieces, it is better to spread the weight over several kiln stilts so that each individual point carries as little as possible. If glaze runs onto the stand, it can fuse there. Protect the kiln shelf underneath with kiln wash.
