Botz Stoneware Engobe 9826 Florida – orange, matt and opaque

Botz stoneware engobe 9826 Florida is a liquid orange engobe for colouring stoneware. It belongs to the Botz Edition range and is stable in the firing range of 1,180–1,280 °C, so you can use it at a variety of stoneware firing temperatures. Without glaze it has a soft matt, earthy finish with good coverage and crisp contours.

According to Botz, the Edition colours can be mixed with each other and also cover well on dark clay bodies. Under a clear glaze the orange becomes glossy and more vivid. The tub contains 200 ml; the colour is also available in 800 ml.

Applying the engobe

Stir the engobe well before use, as it settles in the tub. Apply it with a brush to leather-hard or bisque-fired clay. Let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next.

• Apply 2–3 coats until the colour covers evenly
• Fired on its own, the surface stays matt
• With a coat of Botz Transparent 9300 or 9870 it becomes glossy and more intense in colour

Firing, glaze and tableware

The firing range of the engobe is 1,180–1,280 °C. Botz shows its examples fired at 1,250 °C. For tableware, combine the engobe with a suitable glaze: according to Botz, the engobes are recommended for tableware depending on the glaze. Choose the glaze carefully and check its specifications beforehand.

Mixing and combining colours

Florida can be mixed with other Botz Edition colours, so you can create your own shades. Note down the mixing ratios so that you can match the colour again later. A test tile on your own clay shows you beforehand how the orange will look.
