Botz PRO 9621 Feueropal – glossy orange-red brush-on glaze for 1020–1280 °C

Botz PRO 9621 Feueropal is a liquid, glossy glaze in orange and red for brushing onto earthenware and stoneware. With a firing range of 1020–1280 °C, you can use it for earthenware as well as for high firing. The tin contains 200 ml.

The colour effect changes with the firing temperature. From 1020 °C, Feueropal develops its colour and is almost opaque. At approx. 1150 °C, where some early-sintering clays are fired, the colour is retained, but the surface becomes more semi-transparent. In high firing or stoneware firing, the result is a glassy, semi-transparent surface. According to Botz, good results are also achieved on porcelain at 1250 °C. Because the glaze becomes semi-transparent, the colour of your clay body affects the result. A test tile made from your own clay shows you beforehand how Feueropal will look.

Applying and firing Feueropal

Stir the glaze well before use and brush it onto the clean, bisque-fired clay body with a soft brush. Let each coat dry slightly before applying the next. The number of coats depends on the firing temperature:

• From 1020 °C (earthenware): 2–3 coats, the colour becomes strong and almost opaque
• Around 1150 °C: 2 coats, the surface becomes more semi-transparent
• High firing/stoneware up to 1280 °C: 2 coats, glassy, semi-transparent surface
• Porcelain at 1250 °C: 2 coats

Avoiding runs and combining

When applied thickly, Feueropal tends to run from 1150 °C. It is therefore better to apply several thin coats rather than one thick coat, leave the foot of the piece unglazed and protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash. According to Botz, the glaze combines well with Botz Unidekor. Feueropal is also available in 800 ml, and in the PRO series you will find other colours such as Rubinrot and Amethyst.
