Botz PRO 9315 Larimar – blue to turquoise liquid glaze for earthenware and stoneware

Botz PRO 9315 Larimar is a ready-to-use liquid glaze in a blue to turquoise shade. You can use it across a wide firing range of 1020 to 1280 °C, so it suits both earthenware and stoneware. The surface is glossy and semi-transparent.

The colour effect depends on the firing temperature. At around 1050 °C, the straightforward earthenware range, the glaze becomes strongly coloured and almost opaque. For this, apply 2 to 3 coats. At around 1150 °C, as some early-vitrifying clays require, the colour is retained but the surface becomes more semi-transparent. Here 2 coats are enough. In a high firing at stoneware temperatures it turns glassy and semi-transparent, and on porcelain at 1250 °C it gives good results according to Botz. Because the glaze is translucent, the colour of your clay affects the result. A test tile made from your clay will show you beforehand how Larimar looks on it.

Application

Stir the glaze thoroughly before use. If it is too thick, add a little water. Apply 2 to 3 coats and let each coat dry. The glaze must be thoroughly dry before firing. It can be combined with BOTZ Unidekor.

Avoiding runs

Larimar tends to run when applied thickly. Apply it more thinly on the lower third of the piece and leave the foot unglazed. This keeps the kiln shelf clean; as an extra precaution, protect it with kiln wash.

Suitability for tableware

Botz recommends the PRO glazes for tableware and describes them as non-hazardous (no labelling required). For tableware, the clay must be vitrified. With earthenware in the range of 1020 to 1100 °C, many clays are not yet watertight. According to Botz, you should not use such ceramics for liquids over long periods. Anyone selling tableware is responsible for its food safety themselves.
