Botz 9861 Betongrau stoneware glaze – satin grey with a concrete effect

Botz 9861 Betongrau is a liquid stoneware glaze in a satin grey with fine, concrete-like effects. It gives good coverage and suits vessels, bowls and objects with a calm, modern look. According to Botz, it is stable across the whole firing range of 1220–1280 °C and is recommended for dinnerware.

The colour depends on the firing temperature, so you can control it deliberately. The tub contains 200 ml. That is enough to try the glaze on a few pieces before you need larger quantities.

How Betongrau looks at different temperatures

Botz recommends 1250 °C with a 30-minute hold. If you want to change the shade, you can go higher or lower within the firing range:

• 1220 °C: darker, richer colour, more matt, less of the effect
• 1250 °C: medium shade, granite matt, attractive effects
• 1280 °C: lighter colour, glossier, plenty of effects

Application

Stir the glaze well before use and apply 2 to 3 coats with a brush, preferably three. Let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next. With several coats the colour becomes evenly opaque and the concrete effects show to better advantage. As shade and gloss vary slightly depending on the kiln and temperature, a test piece made from your own clay will show you in advance how the grey turns out for you. Betongrau is one of the Botz stoneware glazes with fine effects. There are other shades such as Wüstengelb, Vergissmeinnicht or Eukalyptus, which you can combine if you want to coordinate several pieces.
