Botz stoneware glaze 9886 Creme gesprenkelt – glossy, opaque, with brown speckles

Botz stoneware glaze 9886 Creme gesprenkelt is a liquid, glossy and opaque glaze in cream with small brown speckles. You fire it on stoneware in a firing range of 1220 to 1280 °C. The tub contains 200 ml, enough for smaller pieces and test glazing.

Applied very thinly, the glaze looks reddish-brown, for example on edges or rims where it runs thinner. This produces gradations in the cream tone. As the glaze is opaque, it determines the colour effect. The colour of your clay plays a smaller part than with translucent glazes. The high firing temperature makes the stoneware vitrified and frost-proof.

How to apply the glaze

The glaze is ready to use. Apply it to bisque-fired, dust-free ware.

• Stir the glaze well before applying
• Apply 2–3 coats with a brush and let each coat dry thoroughly
• Leave the base unglazed and do not place the piece on stilts
• Fire in the range 1220–1280 °C; 1250 °C with a 30-minute hold is recommended

Choosing and common mistakes

Evenly applied coats give the cream surface with the speckles. An application that is too thin, on the other hand, makes the glaze look reddish-brown. If you do not want this effect, apply three coats. Protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash in case glaze runs at the underside. A test piece made from your clay shows you beforehand how the speckles and colour look in your firing. The same glaze is also available in the 800 ml tub for larger quantities.
