Botz Stoneware Engobe 9807 Toffee – matt brown engobe for stoneware

Botz Stoneware Engobe 9807 Toffee is a liquid engobe in a warm brown for decorating stoneware. It comes in a 200 ml pot. It is a solid colour, matt and opaque, and it is stable in the firing range of 1180 to 1280 °C. Without glaze it has a soft matt, earthy look, with good coverage and crisp contours. This lets you define areas, patterns and motifs cleanly.

The engobe belongs to the Botz Edition series and can be mixed with other Edition colours. This allows you to create your own shades. Make a test piece first, as the result depends on your clay and your firing.

Application

Stir the engobe well before use. Apply 2–3 coats to leather-hard or bisque-fired clay and let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next. Thin coats usually turn out more even than one thick application. Applying it too thickly can cause cracking and flaking as it dries.

Matt on its own or glossy with glaze

Applied on its own, the engobe stays matt. If you want a more vivid colour and a glossy surface, cover it with a clear glaze, for example Botz 9300 or 9870. Then fire within the temperature range specified by the glaze. The range shared by engobe and glaze lies within 1180–1280 °C.

Which pot size?

9807 Toffee is available in a 200 ml pot and an 800 ml pot. The small pot is enough for tests, accents and individual pieces. If you are applying engobe to larger areas or many vessels, the larger pot makes more sense.
