Mayco Jungle Gems CG-954 Wildfire – orange crystal glaze with yellow crystals

Mayco Jungle Gems CG-954 Wildfire is a liquid crystal glaze for bisque-fired ceramics, used to decorate pieces such as vases and bowls. At 1015 °C, according to Mayco, Wildfire is an opaque orange base glaze with large yellow crystals that bloom and small black speckles.

The glaze contains crystalline particles that spread during firing and form a different pattern on every piece. It is ready to use. At higher temperatures the colours become paler: at 1,305 °C the orange base glaze remains, while the crystals fade and melt. Mayco also states increased flow, and surface problems may occur. Wildfire belongs to the Jungle Gems series.

Applying Wildfire

Shake the glaze well before each use and stir it so that the crystals are evenly distributed. Apply 2–3 even coats with a fan brush to bisque-fired ceramics (bisque firing cone 04, approx. 1,063 °C, guide value per Orton chart). Let each coat dry between applications.

• On the third coat, redistribute the crystals if necessary so that they lie evenly
• Do not place crystals near the base, as they may run during firing
• Allow to dry thoroughly before firing

Firing and result

Mayco recommends 999–1046 °C, which corresponds to cone 06–05 (approx. 998 °C and approx. 1,031 °C respectively, guide value per Orton chart). The look described, with an orange base and large yellow crystals, appears at a reference firing of 1015 °C. Because of the increased flow, leave a little space at the foot of the piece and protect the kiln shelf.

What Wildfire is suitable for

Wildfire is suitable for vases, bowls and other decorative pieces. The surface may crackle, so the glaze is not intended for dinnerware or for contact with food.
