Goerg & Schneider Clay Body 241 – grog-free stoneware clay for throwing
Clay body 241 from Goerg & Schneider is a highly plastic stoneware clay without grog, intended mainly for throwing on the potter's wheel. You can also press and stamp it out. Without grog the surface stays fine, which suits vessels with cleanly finished walls.
After firing, the clay body is white to light cream. Transparent, coloured and opaque glazes show well on the pale ground. According to the manufacturer, the firing range is 1000–1280 °C.
Working with clay body 241
Without grog, the clay feels smooth when thrown. This helps with fine walls and precise shapes on the wheel. Very tall or wide shapes need an even wall thickness, otherwise the piece warps more easily. Let thrown pieces dry slowly and evenly, especially if the base and walls differ in thickness.
Shrinkage, firing and glaze
The clay shrinks by approx. 7 % when drying and by approx. 3 to 8 % during firing, depending on the temperature. Plan your designs larger accordingly. The higher you fire, the denser the clay body becomes: at 1070 °C it still absorbs approx. 10 % water, at 1240 °C only approx. 0.4 %. Choose a glaze to suit your firing temperature. The coefficient of thermal expansion (COE) helps with glaze fit, because if glaze and clay body do not match, crackle or flaking can occur. A test piece shows you the colour and surface before you glaze larger work.
