Goerg & Schneider Clay 264 – plastic stoneware clay, firing white to light cream
Clay 264 from Goerg & Schneider is a plastic stoneware clay with 25 % grog (grain size 0–0.5 mm) for hand-building and modelling ceramics. It fires white to light cream. According to the manufacturer, it is an all-round clay for small to medium-sized pieces.
The fine grog stabilises the piece without creating a coarse surface. With a firing range of 1000 to 1280 °C, you can combine the clay with glazes that suit your firing. It is suitable for beginners and for anyone looking for an uncomplicated clay for hand-building.
Working with the clay
The plastic consistency makes the clay soft and easy to shape. When hand-building, score the joining surfaces and join the parts with slip. Keep the wall thickness even. Dry larger pieces or pieces of varying thickness particularly slowly and evenly to avoid stress cracks and warping. For new combinations of glaze and firing, a test firing is worthwhile.
Which firing temperature should you choose?
As the temperature rises, the clay shrinks more and becomes denser: firing shrinkage is 3 % at 1070 °C and 6 % at 1140 °C and 1240 °C. Water absorption falls from 8 % at 1070 °C to 1 % at 1240 °C. Allow for the shrinkage when sizing your piece, and fire pieces that need to become watertight at the upper end of the firing range. Choose the glaze to match the firing temperature.
