Mayco Jungle Gems CG-970 Masquerade – black crystal glaze with colourful crystals

Mayco Jungle Gems Crystal Glaze CG-970 Masquerade is a liquid crystal glaze for decorative ceramics. It is an opaque black base glaze with red, orange, yellow and green crystals that melt and bloom in the kiln. This creates lively surfaces with individual patterns, for example on vases, bowls and ornamental pieces. The glaze is ready to use and comes in a 118 ml container.

Fire at cone 06 to cone 05. At higher temperatures the colours become paler. Masquerade is intended for decorative purposes only and is not suitable for dinnerware.

Applying Masquerade

Shake the glaze well before each use and stir it so that the crystals are evenly distributed. Apply it to bisque-fired ceramics, ideally with a fan brush. The crystals create the pattern, so it is worth not letting them settle at the bottom of the container.

• Bisque firing beforehand at cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
• Apply 2–3 even coats and let each coat dry before the next
• For the third coat, redistribute the crystals if needed so that the coverage is even
• Let the glaze dry thoroughly before firing
• Fire at cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart)

Avoiding run-off

Because of their flow properties, the crystals can run during firing. Do not place them near the base of your piece. This keeps the foot clean and stops the crystals from running onto the kiln shelf. Stay within the stated firing range, as the colours become paler at higher temperatures.

What Masquerade suits

The opaque black base makes the colourful crystals stand out strongly. It suits vases, bowls and other decorative projects. Do not use this glaze on plates, cups or other vessels that come into contact with food; according to Mayco it is not suitable for dinnerware.
