Botz PRO 9301 Opalweiß – liquid glaze for earthenware, stoneware and porcelain
Botz PRO 9301 Opalweiß is a white liquid glaze for earthenware, stoneware and porcelain. It can be used across a very wide firing range of 1020–1280 °C. This means you can use it on clays fired at different temperatures and do not need a separate glaze for each firing temperature.
The surface is glossy. How opaque or translucent the result is depends on the firing temperature and the number of coats (see below). The 800 ml container holds enough for several pieces or larger vessels. Botz PRO 9301 Opalweiß is also available in 200 ml. The PRO range includes further colours, for example Transparent, Achatgrau, Citrin Yellow and Seladongrün.
Which firing temperature should you choose?
The PRO range behaves differently depending on the temperature. Choose the firing to suit your clay:
- From 1020 °C (earthenware): The colours turn out strong and almost opaque. Apply the glaze in 2–3 coats.
- Around 1150 °C (some early-vitrifying clays): The colour is retained, but the surface becomes more semi-transparent. 2 coats are enough here.
- High firing and stoneware: The surface becomes glassy and semi-transparent, with intense pastel shades in the PRO palette. Good results are also possible on porcelain at 1250 °C.
Application and avoiding runs
Stir the glaze well before use and apply it to the bisque-fired piece. Let each coat dry before applying the next. PRO glazes tend to run when applied thickly. So apply several thin coats rather than one thick one, keep the layer thin especially on the lower part of the piece, and leave the foot unglazed. This stops the glaze sticking to the kiln shelf. Because the glaze becomes semi-transparent at high firing, the colour of your clay also affects the result. A test tile made from your clay will show you beforehand how the white looks with it.
