Botz Engobe 9052 Dunkelbraun – opaque, matt, for decorating ceramics

Botz liquid glaze 9052 Engobe Dunkelbraun is an opaque, matt brown engobe for decorating ceramics. You apply it with a brush or slip trailer to leather-hard to dry, unfired or bisque-fired clay. Left unglazed, the surface has a matt, earthy finish.

The engobe is stable in a firing range of 900 to 1100 °C. Botz recommends firing at approx. 1050 °C.

Applying the engobe

Stir the engobe well before use. Apply two to three coats so that the colour becomes opaque. A slip trailer suits small areas and fine lines, while a brush is better for larger areas. A thin coat looks less intense; several coats build up opacity.

• For greater colour intensity, apply a thin coat of Botz 9106 Transparent glänzend over the top (also possible in single firing)

Techniques and combinations

The engobe is suitable for sgraffito, where you scratch patterns through the layer of colour. Marbling and feathering also work well: for these, use it slightly diluted on damp, bisque-fired or leather-hard clay. It can be mixed with Botz 9450 in a ratio of 30 % engobe to 70 % glaze. This gives an inexpensive coloured glaze with a satin finish and fine speckles, applied in three coats. For small objects, the engobe can also be used as casting slip; fired at 1050 °C, it vitrifies and is frost-resistant.
