Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-060 Silver Lining – opaque grey glaze, glossy
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-060 Silver Lining (Mayco code SC-60) is an opaque, glossy ceramic glaze in grey for wet clay and for bisque-fired earthenware and stoneware. You apply it with a brush and fire it to a glossy finish without an additional clear glaze. According to Mayco, it is formulated to mature at cone 06/05, that is cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) or cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart).
According to Mayco, Silver Lining stays opaque and does not change colour at cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in an oxidising firing. Other colours in the range turn semi-transparent, lighten or fade in high firing. If you fire stoneware, Silver Lining is therefore a reliable choice.
Applying Stroke & Coat
One coat is translucent; further coats increase opacity. Mayco recommends 2–3 coats. Let each coat dry before applying the next, otherwise you will loosen the layer underneath. The glaze stays where you apply it, so you can paint fine lines and multicoloured designs. All colours in the range can be mixed with one another. Thinned, they give soft gradients and transparent glazing effects.
Firing and high firing
You can fire from cone 06 to cone 10, oxidising or reducing. In mid-range or high firing, designs may run. Mayco therefore recommends a test piece with your own clay and your own kiln. The behaviour at cone 6 is also given on the label.
- Maturing firing: cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) or cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
- Firing range: cone 06 to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
- Cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart): Silver Lining opaque, no colour change
Dinnerware and safety
After firing in line with the manufacturer's instructions, the glaze is dinnerware safe according to Mayco. Stroke & Coat carries the ACMI AP seal; according to ACMI, it is exempt from hazard labelling. Responsibility for food-contact testing lies with the manufacturer of the finished item.
