Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-37 Ivory Tower – opaque, glossy glaze in light white-beige
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-37 Ivory Tower is a ceramic brush-on glaze in light white-beige for application on wet clay, bisque and stoneware. The glaze is heavily pigmented and thick. It fires glossy and opaque, with no need to layer a clear glaze over it. The jar contains 236 ml.
Mayco has formulated Stroke & Coat for cone 06/05, that is cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) and cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart). According to Mayco, it can be fired from cone 06 up to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), in oxidation and reduction. According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. The AP seal (Approved Product) means, according to ACMI: non-hazardous (no labelling required).
Applying Ivory Tower
You control the opacity through the number of coats: according to Mayco, one coat is translucent, and for full opacity Mayco recommends 2–3 coats. The colours in the series can be mixed with each other. Thinned with water, they give watercolour-style washes.
- Stir the glaze well before use
- Apply evenly with a soft brush
- Let each coat dry before applying the next
- Leave the base of the piece free of glaze so that it does not stick to the kiln shelf
Firing and high firing
At cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in oxidation, Ivory Tower stays opaque according to Mayco, but the colour lightens slightly. For other firing temperatures, reduction or your own clay body, the result may differ. Make a test piece with your clay in your kiln before firing stoneware.
