Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-053 Purple Haze – purple glaze for bisque and stoneware
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-053 Purple Haze is a purple, glossy ceramic glaze for greenware, bisque and stoneware. It comes in a 236 ml bottle (8 fl oz). It fires glossy and needs no clear glaze over it. Use it for areas of colour, lines and multicoloured designs.
Mayco formulates Stroke & Coat for a maturing firing at cone 06/05 (approx. 998 °C or approx. 1,031 °C, guide value per Orton chart). You can fire the glaze in oxidation or reduction.
Firing and colour effect of Purple Haze
According to Mayco, the firing range runs from cone 06 to cone 10 (approx. 998 °C to approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). At cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), Purple Haze is semi-transparent and lightens to a powder blue. If you are firing stoneware, expect a different shade from the cone 06 firing. At mid-range or high-fire temperatures, designs may also run. Mayco therefore recommends testing with your own clay and your own kiln.
Applying the glaze
Stir the glaze well before applying it. One coat gives a translucent result, and the colour becomes more opaque with each further coat. Mayco recommends 2–3 coats. Let each coat dry before applying the next. Thinned, the glaze gives soft gradients and transparent effects. All the colours in the series can be mixed with each other, so you can create in-between shades.
Dinnerware and safety
According to Mayco, after firing Stroke & Coat is dinnerware safe when used as directed by the manufacturer (Dinnerware Safe). The series bears the ACMI AP (Approved Product) seal, and according to ACMI is non-hazardous (no labelling required).
