Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-71 Purple-Licious – purple glaze for clay, bisque and stoneware
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-71 Purple-Licious is a glossy purple ceramic glaze, 236 ml. You can apply it to damp clay, bisque and stoneware and fire it in oxidation or reduction. According to Mayco, it can be fired from cone 06 to cone 10. It therefore suits the kiln in a workshop, class or studio, whether you fire earthenware or stoneware.
The glaze fires glossy even without an additional clear glaze. Mayco's Stroke & Coat colours can be mixed with one another and thinned with water or medium.
Application and coverage
Stir the glaze well before use. One coat gives a translucent purple; further coats make the colour more opaque. Mayco recommends 2–3 coats for full coverage. Let each coat dry before applying the next. If you thin the glaze with water or medium, you get transparent effects and soft gradients. You can also mix it with other Stroke & Coat colours to create your own shades.
Firing and temperature
Mayco formulates the glaze for cone 06/05. Cone 06 is approx. 998 °C and cone 05 approx. 1,031 °C (guide values per Orton chart in each case). It can be fired from cone 06 to cone 10 (cone 6: approx. 1,222 °C, cone 10: approx. 1,285 °C, guide values per Orton chart). At mid-range or high-fire temperatures the colour may change and designs may run. For cone 6 or higher, therefore, do a test firing with a piece of your own clay before glazing a whole piece.
Tableware and safety
According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. It carries the ACMI AP (Approved Product) seal, which indicates products exempt from hazard labelling.
