Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-29 Blue Grass – gloss glaze for greenware, bisque and stoneware
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-29 Blue Grass is a brush-on ceramic glaze for earthenware and stoneware pottery. You can apply it to wet clay, to bisque and to bisque-fired stoneware. The glaze fires to a gloss finish and needs no clear glaze. The jar contains 236 ml.
Stroke & Coat is a whole series of colours that can be mixed with one another. You can therefore use Blue Grass straight from the jar or blend it with other shades in the series. Thinned with water or medium, it gives wash and watercolour effects.
Application and firing
Stir the glaze well before use and apply it evenly with a brush. Let each coat dry before you apply the next. The glazes in the series are designed for cone 06/05 (approx. 998 °C and approx. 1031 °C respectively, guide value per Orton chart). The firing range extends up to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart).
- Oxidising or reducing firing possible
- For firings above cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), Mayco recommends a test first, as the colours behave differently there
- The behaviour at cone 6 is given on the relevant label
Controlling opacity
The number of coats determines the result: one coat gives a translucent result, while 2–3 coats make the glaze opaque. Applying it too thinly therefore shows brush strokes and lets the clay show through. For even surfaces, apply several coats rather than one thick coat. If you want gradients or transparent glazing effects, thin the glaze with water or medium.
Glazing dinnerware
According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe after correct firing. The piece must be fired correctly for this. Also make sure the glaze does not come into contact with glazes that are not intended for dinnerware.
